Incident Overview
A student pilot, operating under supervised solo conditions, was engaged in pattern work at an airport, executing repeated takeoffs and landings. While at an altitude of approximately 300 feet above the airport, the helicopter's engine lost power unexpectedly. The student pilot promptly initiated an autorotation, a standard emergency procedure for helicopters, and guided the aircraft toward an open field. The helicopter touched down in the field, sustaining damage during the forced landing. No injuries were reported.
Pilot Account
The student pilot reported that during the preflight inspection, he checked the fuel quantity using the cockpit fuel gauge, which indicated 5/8 of a tank. This indication was verified by a dip stick test. After completing several circuits in the traffic pattern, the pilot noted the fuel gauge had dropped to 3/8. The entire flight lasted approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Investigative Findings
An FAA Inspector examined the helicopter following the incident. The inspector drained the fuel tank and found less than 12 ounces of fuel remaining in the undamaged tank. The inspector also stated that no other maintenance discrepancies were found that could have contributed to the accident.
