What happened
The pilot reported experiencing a complete loss of engine power during flight. Unable to restart the engine or reach an alternate airfield, the pilot executed a forced landing in a grassy field. Upon touchdown, the nose wheel sheared off due to the impact with the soft terrain. The nose strut subsequently dug into the ground, causing the airplane to nosed-over.
The investigation
FAA investigators examined the wreckage and the aircraft's systems. They found that the fuel tanks were empty. There was no evidence of fuel spillage or leakage from the tanks, which suggested the fuel had been consumed rather than lost through a leak.
Findings
The pilot stated in part, 'I do believe it was fuel exhaustion.' The investigation confirmed the aircraft had run out of fuel. The mechanical failure of the nose gear was a result of the hard landing on soft ground.
