Incident Overview
While on approach to the destination airport following a cross-country flight, the tower instructed the pilot to turn left onto a downwind leg for landing. After completing the left turn, the engine ceased operation at approximately pattern altitude.
Pilot Actions
The pilot reported switching the fuel selector between tanks several times in an unsuccessful attempt to restart the engine. Following the event, recovery personnel found the fuel selector positioned on the auxiliary fuel tank.
Fuel Distribution
Post-accident examination revealed the following fuel quantities: about 18 gallons in the right fuel tanks, 2 gallons in the auxiliary tank, and 16 gallons in the right main tank. The left fuel tanks were ruptured during the event.
Flight Time and Fuel Consumption
The estimated flight time from departure to North Las Vegas was 1.5 hours. According to the engine manufacturer, the estimated fuel consumption at 75 percent power for that duration would be 24.375 gallons.
