Accident Overview
Shortly after departure, at an altitude of approximately 300 to 500 feet above ground level, the pilot executed a right turn followed by a left turn. During the left turn, the pilot noted greater than normal resistance in the control stick. The pilot indicated that he was returning to the airport when the engine began to backfire and then abruptly stopped.
Collision and Post-Impact Fire
The aircraft subsequently collided with a tree at a 45-degree nose-down attitude and burst into flames. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, after the engine stopped, the airplane stalled and descended directly into the trees.
Examination and Cause
A post-accident examination revealed that both the engine and airframe were consumed by fire. The reason for the loss of engine power could not be determined.
