During a short field takeoff, the aircraft failed to become airborne after reaching rotation speed. The pilot aborted but overshot the runway, striking a dirt mound, causing gear failure, fuel tank compromise, and a post-impact fire. Occupants evacuated with minor injuries. Investigation revealed the aircraft was overweight and the pilot did not perform weight and balance or takeoff performance calculations.

Accident Sequence

The pilot initiated a short field takeoff procedure, holding the brakes until full engine power was obtained. Approximately 1,200 feet down the runway, the aircraft reached the normal rotation speed of 68 to 70 knots but did not become airborne. The pilot judged that the aircraft could not clear a tree line 40 to 50 feet high at the departure end of the runway and aborted the takeoff. During the abort, the aircraft overshot the runway end and impacted a large mound of dirt, which tore the left and right main landing gear from the wings. Both fuel tanks were compromised, and a post-impact fire ensued. The occupants evacuated the aircraft with minor injuries.

Investigation Findings

Post-accident investigation determined that the aircraft was operating above its maximum allowable gross weight at the time of the attempted takeoff. The aircraft's two wing fuel tanks were completely filled before departure, and there were four occupants on board.
