Event Overview
The pilot of an agricultural airplane reported a sudden and total loss of engine power during the climb after takeoff. The aircraft had reached an altitude of approximately 250 feet above ground level when the power loss occurred. The airplane was configured for agricultural operations, carrying a load of fertilizer at the time.
Pilot Actions
In response to the engine failure, the pilot jettisoned the fertilizer load to reduce weight and attempted to maneuver the airplane toward a nearby interstate highway for an emergency landing. Despite his efforts, the pilot lost control of the aircraft prior to ground impact. The emergency landing was not completed due to the loss of control.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane was destroyed by the collision with terrain and the subsequent post-crash fire. The impact and fire resulted in total loss of the airframe.
Investigation
Investigators examined the accident but were unable to determine the reason for the sudden loss of engine power. The cause of the power loss remains unknown.
