During a touch and go landing, the pilot experienced a loss of engine power at about 50 feet AGL. After an unsuccessful attempt to clear terrain, the airplane settled into trees. The occupants egressed without reported injuries. Post-accident engine run revealed no pre-impact failures; the primer was found unlocked and protruding.

Flight History

The engine run-up check, takeoff, climb, and en route phases were normal. The airplane entered the downwind leg for a touch and go landing, at which point the pilot selected carburetor heat on. After touchdown, the pilot added full throttle and selected carburetor heat off. At approximately 50 feet above ground level, the pilot realized the engine was not producing full power. He did not observe any backfiring, smoke, or unusual vibration from the engine—only a lack of power.

With insufficient runway remaining, the pilot initiated a turn to the west to avoid a cliff at the departure end of the runway. The airplane subsequently settled into trees. The two occupants egressed the airplane.

Engine Examination

While still attached to the airframe, the engine was run through its full operating range; no pre-impact failures were identified. The engine primer was found unlocked and extended approximately 1/4 inch from its seated position.

Weather Conditions

According to the Icing Probability Chart from 'Tips On Winter Flying,' the weather conditions at the time of the accident were conducive for serious icing with glide power.
