Accident Overview
A student pilot experienced a runway excursion after a hard landing during a training flight. The pilot had misunderstood air traffic control (ATC) instructions and initially set up for the wrong runway. After being advised of the error, she was told to depart and reenter the landing pattern for Runway 30.
Sequence of Events
The pilot reported feeling rattled by the confusion. While on approach, she found herself over the runway at an altitude of 300 feet and too fast. She considered executing a go-around but was concerned about potential conflict with traffic on another runway. Instead, she reduced power to land. The airplane contacted the runway hard, bounced into the air, touched down again, and then skidded off the left side of the runway.
