An aircraft departed a runway and entered lower terrain after the crew failed to apply brakes until the end of the runway was nearly reached.

What happened

The occupants of the unspecified aircraft reported that the airplane landed on the first third of a 2,605-foot long runway. Upon touchdown, the occupants noted an initial lack of deceleration. As the aircraft approached the end of the runway, a passenger requested that brakes be applied, at which point the crew engaged the braking system.

Following the application of brakes, skid marks were identified from the right main wheel for 280 feet. This was followed by skid marks from both wheels for an additional 525 feet before the aircraft departed the runway surface. After leaving the pavement, the airplane traveled across 23 feet of grass, briefly became airborne, and eventually settled into lower terrain. All occupants were not injured.

At the time of the event, headwinds were estimated to be between 4 and 8 knots. According to the aircraft's flight manual, the required distance to clear a 50-foot obstacle and come to a stop at maximum landing weight, with calm winds and at a 2,500-foot elevation, is 1,755 feet.

Probable cause

The failure to apply brakes immediately upon landing, resulting in the aircraft overrunning the runway.
