Accident Details
A private pilot flying a tailwheel airplane departed on a local flight after completing three solo touch-and-go landings. A passenger then boarded for a local area flight. During the subsequent departure from runway 19, the pilot reported a complete loss of engine power. Unable to return to the runway due to insufficient altitude, the pilot performed a forced landing in trees adjacent to the runway.
Fuel Status
The pilot's written statement indicated that at the start of the flight, the right main fuel tank was full, and the left main fuel tank was about one-quarter full. Both auxiliary fuel tanks were empty and not in use. The entire flight was conducted with the fuel selector valve positioned on the right main tank.
Post-Accident Observations
A pilot-rated police officer responded to the accident scene approximately 15 minutes after the event. Upon arrival, the officer noted that the left main fuel tank was dry, while the right fuel tank appeared full. The main fuel selector valve had been placed in the off position before the officer's arrival. The pilot reported that he had closed the fuel valve prior to exiting the airplane.
