A multiengine rated pilot and an instructor were conducting a training flight for the commercial multiengine rating. After departing from Van Nuys, they practiced maneuvers before proceeding to Camarillo Airport for landing practice. En route, the instructor reduced power on the right engine to simulate an engine failure.

Approach and Landing Sequence

During the approach, the pilot believed he was making a wide turn from base to final due to wind but considered himself in a good position to land. The instructor assessed the approach as angled but still permitting a normal landing. On final, the pilot observed the airspeed was approximately 10 miles per hour faster than the recommended approach speed of 90 miles per hour. He lowered 10 degrees of flaps.
