Shortly after takeoff, oil covered the windscreen, restricting visibility. The pilot aborted, returned to the runway, but went off the end and stopped on a grassy field. Investigation traced oil to the filler cap area.

Sequence of Events

After takeoff, at approximately 300 feet above ground level, the airplane's windscreen became immediately covered with oil, restricting the pilot's forward visibility. The pilot aborted the takeoff and slipped the airplane back onto the remaining 100 feet of the runway. He applied power to clear railway tracks at the end of the runway, but the airplane went up an embankment and slid to a stop on a grassy field.

Post-Accident Examination

Examination of the wreckage revealed that the oil filler cap was tightly secured and the oil dipstick was still in position. The top cowling was removed, and no loose hoses were found. Using oil streaking on the cowling and windscreen, oil was traced from the windscreen down to the top of the cowling, toward the access door for the oil filler, and then to the oil filler cap. The pilot was uncertain when he last added oil to the engine.
