During a flight to Florida, a pilot experienced an engine power loss on descent, restored power on final approach, then collided with trees during a go-around, damaging the landing gear and wing.

Incident Description

A pilot en route to Florida with a planned refueling stop in South Carolina experienced a loss of engine power during descent from 8,500 feet. Attempts to restore full engine power were unsuccessful, prompting the pilot to select a field for an emergency landing. While on final approach to the field, the engine regained full power. At that point, the pilot elected to execute a go-around. During the climbout phase of the go-around maneuver, the airplane collided with trees at the departure end of the intended landing site.

Aftermath

According to the pilot, the collision with trees resulted in the separation of the left main landing gear assembly and substantial structural damage to the right wing. Despite the damage, the pilot flew the airplane to Aiken, South Carolina. After touchdown on runway 24, the airplane skidded off the left side of the runway.

Weather and Mechanical Factors

Weather conditions at the time of the engine power loss were favorable for the formation of carburetor ice. The pilot reported no mechanical problems with the airplane.
