Accident Details
The pilot was landing at a private airstrip when a herd of horses crossed the runway. According to the pilot, after touchdown while still rolling, he observed horses moving off to his right, approximately 100 feet away on the landing field side of the fence. The horses were moving along the fence line in a slow gallop. The pilot decided to go around and applied full power. As the airplane accelerated, three to four horses ran across the field in its path. The last horse crossed directly in front of the aircraft, not veering away. At or near ground effect speed, the airplane struck the horse broadside with a nose-up attitude. The impact instantly killed the horse. The collision resulted in loss of power, destruction of the propeller, and damage to the nose gear. The airplane dragged the horse for several yards before nosing forward and flipping over.

The pilot stated that the last horse crossed in a straight line, putting it directly in front of the aircraft. The impact occurred at low altitude and low speed. The airplane subsequently nosed over after dragging the horse.
