Accident Sequence
A flight instructor was providing instruction to a private pilot in preparation for a multi-engine flight test. Rain had occurred earlier, leaving the runway surface wet. During the takeoff roll, the instructor simulated an engine failure by allowing the airplane to accelerate and then pulling back the mixture on the left engine at approximately 30 knots. The airplane quickly veered to the left, deviating about 30 degrees from its path.
The private pilot did not immediately retard both throttles. The flight instructor then advanced the mixture on the left engine in an attempt to correct the deviation, but the action was too late. The airplane departed the runway surface. The instructor reduced power, and the brakes were applied. The airplane continued through wet grass before striking an elevated asphalt driveway at a speed of 10 to 15 knots.
Post-Impact
