Incident Summary
During a night landing conducted with a simulated failure of the right engine, a student pilot flared at a height described as "higher than normal." The airspeed subsequently dropped to approximately 68 knots, which was near the aircraft's minimum control speed of 65 knots.
Sequence of Events
The flight instructor (CFI) called for the student to add power. In response, the student increased power only on the left engine. The CFI was not aware that power had been applied to only one engine until the airplane began to go out of control and turned to the right. The CFI attempted to regain control, but the right wing struck the ground on the right side of the runway.
Communication and Environmental Factors
According to the CFI, a breakdown in communication and the time of day (night) were both significant factors in the incident. After the student placed both propeller controls full forward during final approach, the CFI assumed—without verbal confirmation—that the student was executing a normal approach and landing. Additionally, the CFI was unable to see that the student was only manipulating the left throttle due to the lack of cockpit lighting.
