Simulated Engine Failure and Approach
While in the traffic pattern, the flight instructor simulated an engine failure by placing one engine in a zero-thrust condition. The student pilot, who was flying the approach, decided to delay lowering the flaps and landing gear until turning final. On final approach, the student lowered the flaps to the full down position with both engines operating at near-zero thrust. The instructor then returned the failed engine to operational status on short final.
Unexpected Descent and Propeller Strike
Neither crew member noticed anything unusual initially. However, just prior to touchdown, the aircraft appeared to settle more than expected. Before either pilot could take corrective action, both propellers struck the runway surface.
Post-Accident Examination
After the occurrence, the landing gear system was examined and found to function properly. The damage to the landing gear wheel well doors and the flaps was consistent with both components being in transit at the time of ground contact.
