Incident Overview
A cross-country flight was interrupted when the pilot became physically impaired by stomach pains and decided to divert to a nearby airport to use the restroom. During the diversion, the pilot conducted a pre-landing check but omitted switching the fuel tanks.
Engine Power Loss
While on downwind for the approach, the engine lost power. The pilot reported that he then switched the fuel selector from the left tank to the right tank and activated the fuel pump. Despite these actions, the propeller stopped windmilling, and the pilot was unable to restart the engine.
Forced Landing
With the engine inoperative, the pilot performed a forced landing in a field. During the landing, the airplane struck a 5-foot drainage ditch, causing damage.
