Incident Overview
During a landing approach, a pilot reduced engine power, lowered the landing gear, and extended half flaps. When power was subsequently applied, the engine did not respond. The pilot selected a soybean field and executed a forced landing, which resulted in substantial damage to the airplane.
Fuel and Engine Examination
Post-accident investigation confirmed engine continuity and found no pre-existing engine anomalies. Fuel was recovered from the airplane. Additionally, fuel was present on the ground at the scene, and the glass gascolator bowl was found broken. The fuel selector was found in the main tank position; however, it was turned to the off position by the first person to arrive at the accident site.
