On August 6, 1999, a Cessna 182P (registration N4352P) was involved in an aviation accident near Dorrance, PA. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: The pilot's misjudgment of distance and altitude, and his failure to do a go-around. This summary draws on records from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) historical archive.
During an aborted landing on a 1,700-foot sloped airstrip, the airplane's landing gear struck a guy wire 45 feet above ground. The pilot had begun retracting flaps when a gust caused the aircraft to sink, leading to the collision.
Accident Narrative
The pilot attempted to land on an approximately 1,700-foot long airstrip that he had constructed on a 30-degree up-slope oriented northwest. The airplane touched down beyond the intended touchdown point, prompting the pilot to abort the landing and initiate a climb. As the airplane gained altitude, the pilot began retracting the wing flaps. At that moment, a gust of wind caused the airplane to descend. The main landing gear subsequently struck a guy wire that was strung approximately 45 feet above the ground. The guy wire became entangled with the landing gear. The wire was attached to two telephone poles that also carried power lines. The wire slowed the airplane and caused it to nose over.
Pilot Statement
Following the accident, the pilot stated that the airplane was operating normally. He also mentioned that multiple attempts had been made to have the power lines relocated away from the airstrip, but those efforts faced resistance from nearby neighbors.
