Accident Details
Shortly after takeoff in instrument meteorological conditions, the airplane impacted trees located approximately half a mile from the departure airport and below the runway elevation. The departure airport has a field elevation of 2,907 feet.
Wreckage Examination
Examination of the wreckage did not reveal any pre-impact malfunctions of the airframe or engine.
Pilot Information
The pilot obtained his instrument rating about one year prior to the accident. According to reports, he had very little, if any, actual flight experience in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).
Weather Conditions
A weather observation recorded at an airport with a field elevation of 2,284 feet, located about 30 miles northeast of the accident site, included visibility of 1/2 statute mile with light rain and mist; ceiling 700 feet broken, 1,200 feet broken, 1,700 feet overcast; temperature 68 degrees Fahrenheit; dewpoint 66 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, a witness in the area of the departure airport reported that the weather conditions were foggy with intermittent rain.
