What happened
A commercially certificated pilot was conducting a flight to evaluate the condition of an airplane that had previously become disabled at the same remote location. The objective of this specific flight was to land on the beach and assess the extent of the damage sustained by the disabled aircraft.
The pilot identified a suitable landing area where a high tide had recently receded, leaving what appeared to be firm ground. However, during the landing roll, the main landing gear tires sank into the soft sand beneath the surface. This sudden loss of traction and support caused the nose of the airplane to drop forward, resulting in a nosed-over attitude.
The investigation
Post-accident examination revealed significant structural damage consistent with the nose-over event. The propeller sustained substantial impact damage. Additionally, the left wing lift strut was damaged, as was the rudder. These damages were attributed to the forces generated when the aircraft's nose struck the ground during the uncontrolled descent of the front section.
Findings
The primary factor contributing to this incident was the pilot's decision to land on a beach surface that appeared firm due to receding tide but was actually soft sand. The inability of the main landing gear to maintain traction on the soft substrate led directly to the loss of directional control and the subsequent nose-over.
