An airplane experienced engine power loss during cruise when the fuel selector was on the left tank. After a successful forced landing, the pilot attempted an uphill downwind takeoff in tall weeds, but the airplane could not gain speed, struck fences, crossed a ravine, and stopped upright.

Engine Power Loss and Forced Landing

During cruise flight, with the fuel selector positioned to the left fuel tank, the engine lost power. The pilot attempted to select the right fuel tank and restart the engine, but the attempt was unsuccessful. A forced landing to a field was accomplished successfully.

Attempted Takeoff and Accident

After the forced landing, the pilot selected the right fuel tank and started the engine. He then attempted a short field downwind takeoff uphill in 18-inch tall weeds. The airplane could not gain enough speed to keep flying. During the takeoff attempt, the airplane traveled uphill for 165 yards and struck a barbed wire fence. It continued for another 70 yards and struck a second fence. The airplane then traveled 35 yards to a ravine, crossed the 45-foot wide ravine, and continued for 25 yards before coming to a stop upright.

The pilot's takeoff heading was 030 degrees, and the wind was from 130 degrees at 10 knots.
