What happened
The pilot reported that the accident occurred during the landing rollout phase at a private dirt airstrip. As the aircraft was decelerating on the ground, a gust of wind pushed the airplane toward the left side of the runway. The pilot attempted to maintain directional control by applying rudder input to counteract the crosswind effect. Despite these efforts, the pilot was unable to keep the aircraft on the paved or prepared surface.
The airplane eventually departed the runway area and struck a berm that stood approximately two feet high. Following impact with the berm, the aircraft continued forward and encountered a ditch. The force of the collision with the terrain features brought the aircraft to a stop.
The investigation
Examination of the accident site revealed that the aircraft had left the designated runway area during the landing rollout. The presence of a two-foot-high berm at the edge of the airstrip contributed to the severity of the ground contact. The ditch adjacent to the berm further impacted the final resting position of the aircraft.

Gusty winds played a significant role in pushing the aircraft off the runway centerline. The pilot's attempt to correct with rudder control was insufficient to overcome the lateral force exerted by the wind gusts.
