Incident Overview
During an approach, the pilot extended the landing gear and observed that the left main landing gear did not show a green (down and locked) indication. The pilot recycled the gear, but the unsafe indication persisted. The pilot then contacted the control tower at Moline, Illinois, reporting the issue and requesting a low pass over runway 23 so that tower controllers could visually inspect the landing gear. The tower informed the pilot that all three landing gear appeared to be extended.
Landing and Sequence of Events
After the low pass, the pilot performed a landing on runway 09. Upon touchdown, the landing gear collapsed, and the airplane slid off the left side of the runway. It struck a runway marker before coming to rest in the grass south of the runway.
Post-Incident Examination
Examination of the left main landing gear wheel well revealed that the landing gear bellcrank was broken and its pivot bolt was bent. Additionally, the inboard rod end of the gear lock turn buckle was broken. No other anomalies were found.
