Accident Narrative
The pilot was conducting an aerial observation mission for powerlines, with three passengers aboard. The helicopter was initially traveling westbound at a slow hover while the pilot examined a cross arm. After completing that check, the pilot began to accelerate and performed a turn to the east. At approximately 100 feet above ground level, a gust of wind hit the helicopter, causing it to start rotating to the right. The pilot attempted to regain control by accelerating into the wind, but the maneuver did not counter the rotation. Subsequently, the helicopter descended in a corkscrew motion and struck the ground. Following the impact, the helicopter rolled onto its right side.
Environmental Factors
Wind data from a reporting station located 15 miles to the east of the accident site indicated winds out of the west at 280 degrees, with a sustained speed of 16 knots and gusts up to 22 knots.
Aircraft Condition
No pre-impact mechanical anomalies were found in the engine or airframe. The accident resulted in a rollover on the ground.
