Accident Overview
The pilot of an airplane involved in an accident during an instrument landing system (ILS) approach to runway 35 at Liberal Municipal Airport in Kansas reported that the aircraft struck the ground and turned approximately 90 degrees to the right.
Pilot Report
According to the pilot, air traffic control from Kansas City Center provided vectors for the ILS approach to runway 35 and instructed a descent to 4,000 feet mean sea level (msl). The pilot advised that he was established on the approach. The controller issued an altimeter setting of 30.21 inches of mercury, which the pilot set. The pilot observed the altimeter indicating 3,400 feet msl. The glide slope was centered, and the localizer was about one dot off. The pilot began a correction to the right and noted the altimeter indicating 3,300 feet msl, which was above the decision height of 3,074 feet msl. The airplane then struck the ground and turned hard to the right.
