Accident Details
The pilot started the engine and allowed it to operate for 45 minutes due to cold weather, with a temperature of 36 degrees Fahrenheit. After taxiing to the taxiway, the pilot performed an engine run-up and magneto checks, which were reported as satisfactory. The airplane was then taxied to the loading area where 325 gallons of chemical were loaded. Subsequently, the pilot taxied to the runway and performed another engine run-up; the magneto check was normal and the oil temperature was within the green range.
During the takeoff roll, the pilot increased power to 36 inches of manifold pressure and 2,250 rpm. After liftoff, while turning at about 150 feet above ground level, the engine lost power. The pilot dumped the chemical load and initiated a forced landing to a freshly rowed cotton field. The airplane touched down perpendicular to the rows. During the landing roll, the main landing gear sank into the soft ground, causing the aircraft to nose over and come to rest inverted.
Aircraft and Engine Examination
An examination of the engine by an FAA inspector revealed that the #6 cylinder had a preexisting crack.
