Approach and Hard Landing
While on short final for a full-stop landing, the aircraft encountered a wind shift that caused an increased rate of descent. The pilot responded by adding partial power, but the flare was initiated too late. As a result, the aircraft struck the runway with sufficient force to bounce back into the air.
Balloon and Touchdown on Grass
After the bounce, the aircraft ballooned upward and began drifting sideways. It eventually touched down on an open grassy area beside the runway. At that point, the engine power was at idle, and there was ample room to bring the aircraft to a stop on the grass.
Aborted Landing and Go-Around Attempt
Despite the available stopping distance, the pilot elected to abort the landing. He added power and attempted to lift off using two different flap settings. However, he then decided to abort the go-around because he believed he might not clear obstacles ahead.
Collision and Fire
During the subsequent attempt to stop the aircraft on the wet grass, it slid into a residence located just off the southeast end of the runway. Upon impact, both the residence and the aircraft caught fire.
