Accident Overview
A helicopter conducting low-level flight over a lake at an elevation of 10,900 feet was flying at 25 feet above ground level (AGL) with an airspeed of 20 knots. The helicopter began veering to the right. In response, the pilot added power to gain altitude and clear a tree that was in the helicopter's path. Subsequently, the pilot pushed the collective down in an attempt to fly out of 'settling with power.' The pilot reported that he was regaining control of the helicopter when the left skid impacted the water, causing the helicopter to roll over. The helicopter came to rest on its left side, partially submerged in the lake.
Pilot Actions
The pilot initially added power to increase altitude to avoid a tree. After the helicopter began veering right, the pilot then pushed the collective down, describing the maneuver as an attempt to recover from settling with power. The impact occurred with the left skid during the recovery attempt.
Environmental Conditions
The pilot reported clear skies, calm wind, and a temperature of 45 degrees Fahrenheit. The density altitude at the accident site was calculated by the NTSB investigator-in-charge to be approximately 12,477 feet.
Post-Accident Examination
Examination of the helicopter did not reveal any anomalies that would have prevented normal operation.
