The airplane departed runway 17, became airborne midfield, flew nose high at low altitude, then after power changes crossed runway end at 20 ft agl with gear extended, struck trees 1,300 ft beyond, and erupted in fire. Engine examination revealed no operational abnormalities.

Departure and Initial Climb

Witnesses reported observing the airplane commence its takeoff on runway 17. The aircraft became airborne around the midfield point of the 4,667-foot-long runway. After liftoff, it maintained a nose-high attitude while flying approximately 10 to 20 feet above the runway surface.

Engine Power Changes
