Event Overview
Approximately one week before the accident, the flight instructor reviewed soft-field takeoff techniques with the student. On the day of the accident, the instructor again discussed the procedure for 5 to 10 minutes. The student then started the engine and taxied to the runway for the first takeoff of the day.
Takeoff Sequence
After rolling onto the runway, the student advanced the throttle, and the airplane began to accelerate. During the takeoff roll, a minor pitch oscillation developed. Shortly thereafter, the nose moved left and then right. Directional control temporarily stabilized, but then the airplane "veered sharply" to the right.
Runway Excursion
As the airplane departed the right side of the runway, the instructor took control. Despite attempts, he was unable to maneuver the airplane back onto the runway. The airplane entered a wooded area and came to a stop.
Post-Accident Actions
The instructor secured the airplane, and both he and the student exited unassisted. No injuries were reported.
