Incident Overview
A certificated private pilot experienced a complete loss of engine power during cruise flight shortly after switching the fuel selector valve from the right fuel tank to the left fuel tank. The pilot reported that emergency engine procedures failed to restore power, prompting a forced landing on a sand bar.
Landing and Damage
During the landing roll, the left main wheel struck a rut, causing the left main landing gear to collapse. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the left wing and left wing lift strut.
Pilot's Account
In a written report submitted to the NTSB dated August 23, the pilot described the event. Accompanying the NTSB form 6120.1/2, a cover letter included the pilot's statement: "It was a matter of running out of fuel without realizing what was going on and setting down in the most inviting spot."
