Accident Overview
The pilot of a recently purchased airplane was involved in an accident while attempting to ferry the aircraft home. The pilot had bought the airplane the day before and departed the following day on a cross-country flight.
Pre-accident Events
During the ferry flight, the pilot landed at an incorrect airport without obtaining a clearance. After landing, he apologized to the tower controller and informed the controller that he had run out of fuel. The airplane was subsequently serviced and departed on what became the accident flight.
Witness Account
A witness near the accident site reported hearing the airplane fly low over his house. The witness then heard an increase in engine rpm lasting approximately two seconds, followed by a thud.

Weather at the accident site at the time of the accident was described as rainy, foggy, and dark, with the cloud base at approximately treetop level.
Pilot Information
The pilot had no recent night flight experience and did not hold an instrument rating.

Examination of the airframe and engine revealed no preimpact failures or malfunctions.
