On August 14, 2000, a Piper PA-22-150 (registration N2968Z) was involved in an aviation accident near Columbus, OH. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll after a bounced touchdown. This summary draws on records from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) historical archive.
A light aircraft bounced during touchdown, failed to maintain directional control despite full rudder input, and exited the runway into a grassy area where it ground looped.
What happened
The pilot experienced a bounced landing on the runway. During the subsequent landing roll, the airplane began to veer off the paved surface toward a grassy area adjacent to the runway. The pilot applied full rudder deflection in an attempt to maintain directional control, but this input was insufficient to prevent the aircraft from leaving the runway environment.
Once the airplane had exited the runway and entered the grass, it proceeded to ground loop. Meteorological conditions at the time were calm; winds recorded at the airport approximately 20 minutes prior to the accident indicated no significant wind activity.
Probable cause
The pilot's failure to maintain directional control during the landing roll after a bounced touchdown.
