Accident Overview
An instrument-rated pilot experienced disorientation and lost control of the aircraft after takeoff, resulting in an impact with the Mississippi River. The accident occurred approximately 2.2 nautical miles north-northeast of the departure airport.
Flight Details
The pilot departed into known instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) without an instrument flight rules (IFR) air traffic control (ATC) clearance. After takeoff, the pilot contacted ATC to obtain an IFR clearance to the intended destination. The ATC controller instructed the pilot to make a right turn to avoid opposite direction traffic, which was conducting an instrument approach to the airport from which the accident aircraft had just departed.
Accident Sequence
During the turn executed in response to ATC instructions, the pilot became disorientated and lost aircraft control. The airplane subsequently impacted the Mississippi River.
Weather Conditions
Instrument meteorological conditions prevailed at the time of the accident, with visibility of 1-1/2 statute miles and an overcast ceiling of 300 feet above ground level.
Aircraft Examination
Examination of the recovered portions of the airplane revealed no anomalies that could be associated with a pre-impact condition.
