Accident Details

During the takeoff climb, the airplane experienced a loss of engine power and subsequently collided with the tops of trees during the ensuing emergency landing. The pilot reported no mechanical anomalies during the preflight or taxi to the active runway. Prior to takeoff, the airport had closed for approximately five minutes. About four minutes after the airport reopened, the pilot was cleared for takeoff.

After becoming airborne, the engine's revolutions per minute (RPM) dropped. The pilot suspected carburetor icing and applied carburetor heat, but the engine continued to lose power. The pilot intended to land between trees on a nearby golf course, but at the last moment had to maneuver to avoid a golf cart. He then attempted to stall the airplane into the tops of the trees.

Witnesses reported hearing the engine sputtering. At the accident site, fuel was found in the left fuel tank and on the ground underneath the right wing.

Investigation Findings

Examination of the airframe and power plant revealed several discrepancies. The fuel selector was stiff to move. The main discharge nozzle was leaking and stained. The carburetor heat control cable retainer bolt washer and the mixture control cable rod end retainer bolt were both loose. The carburetor itself was found to be in noncompliance with applicable airworthiness directives. No other mechanical anomalies were noted with the airframe, power plant, or carburetor.
