Incident Overview

The flight was conducting an ILS approach to runway 36 with a simulated engine failure. The aircraft did not land and was on final approach when both engines lost power. The pilot subsequently executed a forced landing on Highway 49.

Pilot Statement

The Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) reported that after turning onto the left downwind for runway 36, he set zero thrust with the left throttle and propeller control. About midfield on the downwind, the right engine began to lose power. He turned on both boost pumps and pushed both propellers and throttles forward. The left engine surged a couple of times but could not produce power, while the right engine did not respond. He turned towards the airport and switched the fuel tanks to auxiliary, attempting a restart without success. Switching back to main tanks also proved ineffective. At approximately 400 feet above ground level (AGL), realizing the aircraft would not reach the airport, he turned north to land on Highway 49. Shortly after touchdown, the right wing tip struck a light post, causing the aircraft to spin around and come to a stop.

Investigation Findings

Post-accident inspection of the wreckage revealed sufficient fuel onboard. Investigators verified continuity of flight controls, continuity of the fuel system in all selector positions, operation of the boost pumps, and clear vents. Both engines were removed and subjected to test runs at a facility. Both engines ran satisfactorily, and no discrepancies were found.
