What happened
The incident occurred while the aircraft was operating at an altitude of approximately 2,500 feet above ground level. During this phase of flight, which involved specific maneuvers, the pilot reported hearing a loud "pop" sound. Immediately following this auditory cue, the engine lost all power output.
In response to the sudden loss of propulsion, the pilot initiated a forced landing procedure. The aircraft was directed toward an open field. Upon touchdown, the airplane collided with a fence that was situated within the landing area. After striking the fence, the aircraft continued its momentum and came to rest in an area dense with briar bushes.
The investigation
Following the accident, investigators examined the aircraft's engine components to determine the cause of the power loss. A specific focus was placed on the dual magneto system, which is critical for ignition.
Examination revealed that both sets of points within the magneto system remained closed. This condition persisted regardless of the position of the camshaft. Normally, these points should open and close in sequence to generate spark pulses. The failure of the points to operate as designed suggests a mechanical malfunction within the magneto assembly.
