Landing Attempt on New Airstrip
A pilot was the first to attempt a landing on a recently constructed 1,000-foot airstrip. After making three passes over the strip, the pilot initiated a landing approach in a northwesterly direction, clearing trees estimated to be 30 to 40 feet tall.
Bounce and Veer
Upon touchdown, the airplane bounced twice and began to veer toward the right. After the final touchdown, the aircraft continued to deviate from the airstrip, eventually leaving the runway surface.
Impact and Spin
The airplane then struck a boulder and a tree stump, causing it to spin around approximately 180 degrees before coming to a stop. Winds reported at the time were from the south at about 3 knots.
