Incident Overview
An airliner experienced severe turbulence while descending through approximately flight level 270. The event led to serious injuries for two passengers. The captain reported that the seat belt sign was illuminated and cabin crew made at least two advisory announcements prior to the turbulence.
Passenger Accounts
Two passengers confirmed that the seat belt sign had been on for most of the flight. However, they and several other witnesses noted that passengers were standing and moving about the cabin when the turbulence occurred, and flight attendants were also moving. In contrast, six passengers stated they heard no announcements or warnings to remain seated.
Nature of the Event
Those on board described the onset of the turbulence as sudden, abrupt, and without warning. The encounter occurred while the aircraft was in descent, and the turbulence was severe enough to cause injury to occupants who were not restrained.
