Incident Overview
A private certificated pilot was beginning a landing approach when the engine sputtered after the pilot reduced engine power. The pilot then turned on the engine boost pump and verified that the fuel selector was positioned to 'BOTH'. Subsequently, the pilot increased the throttle control, and the engine quit completely. The airplane descended and collided with three runway approach lighting system assemblies, coming to rest short of the runway threshold.
Aircraft Damage
The airplane sustained damage to the landing gear, the left wingtip, and the leading edge of the right wing. No other damage was reported.
Post-Accident Examination
Following the accident, a mechanic examined the airplane and found 1 1/2 to 2 inches of water in the carburetor. The presence of water in the fuel system may have contributed to the engine's failure, but no official cause was determined in the source.
