On December 27, 2000, a Piper PA-18-135 (registration N9058G) was involved in an aviation accident near Longmont, CO. Investigators recorded the probable cause as: The pilot's failure to maintain runway centerline during the landing roll, which resulted in a runway excursion and subsequent damage to the landing gear and wing structure. This summary draws on records from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) historical archive.
A pilot drifted left during landing on runway 29, corrected right into a ditch, bending the main gear and damaging the wing structure.
What happened
The pilot reported that while attempting to land on runway 29, the aircraft drifted off the left side of the paved surface. In an effort to realign with the runway centerline, the pilot applied right control input. This maneuver caused the airplane to impact a ditch located adjacent to the runway.
The initial impact resulted in significant damage to the airframe's landing gear system. Specifically, the right main landing gear was bent upon striking the ground obstruction. As the aircraft continued its uncontrolled path, the right wing subsequently struck the ground. This secondary impact caused structural deformation of the rear spar carry-through component.
Probable cause
The pilot's failure to maintain runway centerline during the landing roll, which resulted in a runway excursion and subsequent damage to the landing gear and wing structure.
