Aircraft Nosed Over During Takeoff Roll Due to Snow Accumulation

Casualties unknown • Kongiganak, AK, US

A commercial pilot experienced a runway excursion and nose-over during takeoff when the aircraft's left main wheel encountered soft snow on the runway surface.

What happened

During the departure roll on runway 36, a commercial pilot was attempting to compensate for a right crosswind. The runway surface at the time featured a light accumulation of freshly plowed snow. Approximately halfway down the runway, the airplane began to veer toward the left.

In an effort to correct the deviation and maintain alignment with the runway, the pilot applied full right rudder and full right aileron. However, just prior to takeoff, the aircraft's left main wheel made contact with soft snow located on the left side of the runway. This contact caused the airplane to pivot 90 degrees to the left, resulting in a nose-over.

Findings

The pilot reported that there were no mechanical anomalies or issues with the aircraft prior to the accident.

Probable cause

The airplane's left main wheel contacted soft snow on the left side of the runway, causing the aircraft to pivot and nose over.
