Incident Overview
A helicopter flight instructor (CFI) and a student pilot were conducting hover training. The CFI lifted the helicopter into a hover while the student pilot followed through on the flight controls.
Sequence of Events
During the hover, the helicopter began to drift to the left. The CFI applied right cyclic input to correct the drift. However, the student pilot froze on the flight controls, preventing the CFI's inputs from being effective. The CFI verbally instructed the student pilot to release the controls, but there was no response.
The helicopter subsequently pitched up, causing the tail rotor blades to strike the ground. The helicopter continued to roll to the right and came to rest on its right side, having rolled over.
The accident resulted in substantial damage to the helicopter. No injuries were reported.
