Incident Overview
During a routine cruise flight at an altitude of 6,000 feet, approximately two to three miles offshore, the pilot experienced a sudden loud bang accompanied by a violent shake of the aircraft. This event was immediately followed by a loss of engine power.
Sequence of Events
After the loss of engine power, the pilot initiated a glide toward the shore. The pilot then made the decision to ditch the aircraft into the Gulf of Mexico. The aircraft was later recovered from the water.
Post-Incident Actions
Following recovery, the connecting rod and connecting rod bearing were removed from the aircraft and sent via FedEx to the NTSB laboratory for examination on April 18, 2001. However, the NTSB lab never received these parts. Multiple attempts to track the shipment through FedEx were unsuccessful, and the whereabouts of the parts remain unknown.
Investigation Challenges
The loss of the critical engine components in transit has hindered the investigation into the cause of the engine failure. Without the connecting rod and bearing, a detailed metallurgical analysis could not be performed, leaving the precise nature of the failure undetermined.
