Pilot's Account

The helicopter pilot reported that after preflight checks and a normal hover at 3 feet, he rotated 180 degrees to transition out. With everything in the green, he added full power, lowered the cyclic, and slightly raised the collective to begin forward movement. As the helicopter climbed to about 15-17 feet, a coughing sound was heard, followed by silence as the engine quit. The pilot stated, "I tried to get it back on the ground as flat and level as possible. You can not auto[rotate] at 17 feet."
