Incident Overview
A tailwheel airplane sustained damage after veering off a turf runway and colliding with a mound of dirt during the landing roll-out. The pilot reported that a left crosswind, which gusted to 12 knots, was present throughout the day and affected the landing.
Sequence of Events
According to the pilot, the landing was being conducted on a 3,000-foot-long by 50-foot-wide turf runway. During the landing roll-out, the airplane encountered a left crosswind, causing the left wing to begin rising. The pilot attempted to correct for the rising wing but stated that he "couldn't get the wing down fast enough." As a result, the airplane veered to the right side of the runway and subsequently collided with a mound of dirt.
