Incident Details
Before takeoff, the pilot conducted an engine run-up without referring to the aircraft's checklist, which was a departure from his usual procedure. During the takeoff roll, he found he could not pull the control column rearward. The airplane continued down the runway, exited the far end, and struck several small trees.
Pilot Information
The pilot had accumulated 1,300 total flight hours, including 200 hours in the accident airplane make and model. He also held a certified flight instructor certificate.
Examination Findings
A post-accident examination of the airplane revealed that the control column lock was installed in the control column. The lock prevents movement of the control column, which would have precluded the pilot from pulling it back during takeoff.
