Accident Overview
A single-engine airplane sustained impact with terrain during an attempted emergency landing following a partial loss of engine power during takeoff. The pilot reported that the engine lost partial power during the initial climb from runway 32. Emergency landing procedures were executed, but the airplane impacted the ground beyond the departure end of the runway.
Engine Monitoring Data
The airplane was equipped with an engine monitoring instrument that recorded exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs), cylinder head temperatures (CHTs), turbocharger outlet temperature (T1), and the differential between the highest and lowest EGT over 10 previous flights. Data from the accident flight indicated that the total time from engine start-up to impact was approximately 8 minutes and 40 seconds.
According to a representative from the engine manufacturer, the recorded data from the accident flight was consistent with "all six cylinders operating normally for the 8 minutes and 40 seconds from start-up to impact." The representative further stated that the cylinder head temperatures showed a normal increase over time, consistent with typical operation. Data from previous flights exhibited similar EGT and T1 behavior.
Engine Examination
A post-accident examination of the engine did not reveal any discrepancies that would have contributed to a power loss.
Weather Conditions
Weather observations from two nearby facilities provided wind information at the time of the accident. The facility located 4 nautical miles from the accident site reported wind from 190 degrees (variable 160 to 240) at 7 knots. The facility located 6 nautical miles from the accident site reported wind from 210 degrees at 6 knots.
